What is Depression?
Depression is more than a passing low mood. Clinical definitions describe a major depressive episode as a period of at least two weeks of persistent low mood and/or loss of interest or pleasure, accompanied by other changes in sleep, energy, appetite, concentration, or self-worth that interfere with daily life.1
Depression affects thinking, emotions, and physical health, and it can make ordinary tasks feel overwhelming. It is a recognised medical condition — not a character flaw or a sign of weakness — and it responds to treatment.2
Common Signs and Symptoms of Depression
Symptoms recognised in clinical diagnostic criteria include:1
- Persistent low mood: feeling sad, empty, or hopeless most of the day, nearly every day.
- Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy.
- Sleep changes: insomnia or sleeping far more than usual.
- Fatigue or loss of energy.
- Appetite or weight changes.
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions.
- Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt.
- Physical complaints such as headaches or digestive problems without a clear cause.
- Thoughts of death or suicide — if this applies to you, see the crisis information in our FAQ below.
Not everyone experiences every symptom, and depression can look different across ages, genders, and cultures. Only a qualified clinician can make a diagnosis; this list is for recognising when it may be time to reach out.
Does Therapy Work for Depression?
Yes. Psychotherapy is a first-line treatment for depression in both the Canadian (CANMAT 2023) and UK (NICE 2022) clinical guidelines. For mild depression, CANMAT identifies psychotherapy as the preferred treatment when it is readily accessible; for moderate depression, structured psychotherapy and antidepressant medication are the two primary evidence-based options with comparable short-term efficacy; and for severe depression, combining the two is recommended.34
Many people experience meaningful improvement with therapy. Outcomes vary from person to person, and your therapist will track progress with you and adjust the plan as you go.
Seeking Help for Depression
If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of depression, professional support can help. A registered psychologist or certified counsellor can assess what is going on, recommend an approach, and work with you on a plan.
Curio’s therapists have training and experience in guideline-recommended approaches for depression, and we tailor the work to each client rather than applying one method to everyone. See our Calgary counsellors.
Common Treatments for Depression
Evidence-Based Approaches We Use
Your therapist will recommend an approach based on your symptoms, history, and preferences. Approaches used at Curio include:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): a first-line treatment in CANMAT and NICE guidelines. Identifies and reshapes the thinking patterns that keep depression going; NICE describes a typical course as around 8 regular sessions, with more where needed.34
- Behavioural Activation (BA): a first-line treatment. Directly targets the withdrawal and inactivity of depression by rebuilding engagement with meaningful activity.34
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT): a first-line treatment. Focuses on relationships, grief, role transitions, and conflict; NICE describes a typical course as 8 to 16 sessions.34
- Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT): recommended by NICE for people with a history of recurrent depression to reduce the risk of relapse; an individual-patient-data meta-analysis of randomised trials found MBCT reduced relapse risk compared with usual care.45
- Psychodynamic Therapy: explores earlier experiences and unresolved patterns that may underlie depression. NICE lists short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy among the options for depression.4
- Medication: Curio’s psychologists and counsellors do not prescribe. If medication is part of your care, we can coordinate with your family doctor or psychiatrist so treatment is joined up.
Depression Is Common — and Treatable
Depression is common, and it is still stigmatised. In Statistics Canada’s most recent national survey, 7.6% of Canadians aged 15 and older met criteria for a major depressive episode in the previous 12 months — up from 4.7% a decade earlier.6 Many never seek help.
If you’re experiencing symptoms of depression, don’t let stigma hold you back. Our team understands the challenges associated with depression, and we provide a non-judgemental, supportive environment. Reaching out is a practical first step toward feeling better.
Building a Supportive Community
At Curio Counselling, we believe in fostering a supportive community where individuals feel heard, understood, and respected.
Depression can affect anyone. Together, we can work towards breaking down the barriers of stigma, promoting mental health awareness, and making it easier to ask for help.

Depression counselling can help you understand what is driving your depression and build practical tools for managing it. Skills you may develop include:
- Cognitive Restructuring: noticing and reworking unhelpful thought patterns.

- Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: managing stress and rumination.
- Effective Communication: expressing needs and feelings to the people around you.

Frequently Asked Questions about Depression Therapy
How much does depression counselling cost in Calgary?
Depression counselling at Curio is $200 per session with a Canadian Certified Counsellor or Counselling Therapist, $230 per session with a Registered Provisional Psychologist, and $230 per session with a Registered Psychologist. For reference, the Psychologists' Association of Alberta's recommended fee for individual therapy is $235 per session (effective 1 January 2025, unchanged for 2026).7
Alberta Health Care does not cover private therapy, but most extended health benefit plans reimburse some or all of the cost. Every new client can start with a free, no-obligation 20-minute consultation. If cost is a barrier, ask us about sliding-scale availability or see our free and low-cost resources.
How do I find a qualified depression counsellor in Calgary?
Start with credentials and fit. Look for a therapist with a master's-level counselling or psychology degree who is registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) or certified by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), and who uses guideline-recommended approaches such as CBT, Behavioural Activation, or Interpersonal Therapy.
- Verify credentials through the CAP public register or the CCPA directory.
- Ask about depression-specific training, not only general mental health experience.
- Use a free consultation to assess fit before committing.
- Confirm insurance eligibility for your therapist's designation.
The therapeutic relationship matters as much as the method. A meta-analysis of nearly 300 studies found the quality of the client–therapist alliance is a consistent, moderate predictor of outcome across therapy types.8
How long does depression counselling take to work?
Timelines vary with the severity and type of depression and how you respond. Clinical guidelines describe a typical course of CBT or Behavioural Activation as around 8 sessions and Interpersonal Therapy as 8 to 16 sessions, with additional sessions where depression is long-standing or co-occurs with other conditions.4 Some people notice early changes within the first few sessions; deeper or recurrent patterns take longer.
At Curio, your therapist builds a personalised plan in the first sessions and reviews progress with you regularly. The goal is sustainable change, not a quick fix.
Does Alberta Health Care cover depression counselling?
The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) does not cover private psychology or counselling. Most Calgarians pay through extended health benefits, an Employee Assistance Program, or out of pocket.
- Extended health benefits: many workplace plans reimburse a portion of the fee up to an annual maximum; coverage varies by plan and by the therapist's designation.
- Employee Assistance Programs (EAP): many employers provide a small number of free, confidential sessions.
- Free public option: Albertans can access mental health support through Alberta Health Services by calling Health Link at 811.9
- Low-cost options: sliding-scale fees and community organisations such as Calgary Counselling Centre, Eastside Community Mental Health Services, and YWCA Calgary.
Registered Psychologists are eligible under most extended health plans. Coverage for Canadian Certified Counsellors varies by insurer — confirm your therapist's designation, annual maximum, and any pre-approval requirement with your provider before booking.
Is therapy or medication better for depression — do I need antidepressants?
Neither is automatically better; it depends on the severity and nature of your depression. Canadian guidelines identify psychotherapy as the preferred first-line treatment for mild depression when it is accessible, and for moderate depression describe psychotherapy and medication as having comparable short-term efficacy, with the choice guided by availability and preference. For severe depression, combining therapy and medication is recommended.3 UK guidance similarly advises against routinely offering antidepressants as first-line treatment for less severe depression unless that is the person's preference.4
Curio's therapists are psychologists and counsellors, not physicians, so we don't prescribe. If you're considering medication, we'll discuss it with you and can coordinate with your family doctor or psychiatrist. The decision about antidepressants is yours to make with a prescribing provider, and many people do meaningful work in therapy with or without medication.
What types of therapy are most effective for depression?
Several approaches have strong evidence. CANMAT 2023 designates CBT, Interpersonal Therapy, and Behavioural Activation as first-line psychological treatments; MBCT is designated second-line for acute treatment but is recommended by NICE for preventing relapse in recurrent depression.345 Psychodynamic therapy is also listed by NICE as an option.4 The right one depends on your symptoms, preferences, and what's driving the depression — see the approaches section above.
What should I expect at my first depression counselling session?
Your first session is about getting comfortable and giving your therapist what they need to build a plan. You'll be welcomed by our receptionist, offered a beverage, and invited to choose your seat. There's no pressure to share more than you're ready to.
A typical first session covers your current symptoms and what brought you in; relevant background including previous therapy, medical history, and supports; what you hope to get from counselling; and the recommended approach and session frequency. You can go at your own pace, feeling nervous is normal, and you're not committed to continuing if it isn't the right fit. See what to expect.
Can depression counselling be done online, or do I have to come in?
Both. We offer in-person sessions at our Beltline office and secure video or phone sessions across Alberta. A meta-analysis of randomised trials found no significant difference in depression outcomes between teletherapy and in-person psychotherapy, and CANMAT 2023 recognises telephone and digital delivery of CBT as effective.310
Online sessions can be especially helpful when depression drains your energy — joining from home removes the barrier of getting ready, commuting, and parking, which is often the hardest part on a low day. Many clients mix formats.
Can counselling help if I've already tried therapy before and it didn't work?
Yes. A disappointing experience doesn't predict the next one. Common reasons earlier therapy didn't land include a mismatch between approach and the type of depression, a poor therapist fit, stopping too soon, or work that stayed at the level of coping skills without addressing underlying patterns.
We assess your specific situation and tailor treatment, and the free consultation lets you check fit before committing. Because the therapeutic alliance is a consistent predictor of outcome,8 finding the right fit is a legitimate reason to try again.
What if I'm having thoughts of suicide or self-harm?
If you're thinking about suicide or hurting yourself, please reach out now. Support is available 24/7.
- Immediate danger: call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department.
- 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline: call or text 988, free and confidential, anywhere in Canada.
- Calgary Distress Centre: 403-266-4357 (HELP), 24-hour crisis support.
Curio Counselling is not a crisis service. Once you're safe, ongoing counselling — including self-harm therapy — can be part of recovery. Depression is treatable.
