Calgary Counselling for Religious and Spiritual Trauma

Curio Counselling provides religious and spiritual trauma therapy in Calgary for people healing from spiritual abuse, high-control groups and cults, church hurt, and the grief and identity loss that can follow leaving — or questioning — a faith community, in person at our Beltline office (1414 8 St SW, Suite 200) and online across Alberta. Our trauma counsellors include Registered Psychologists regulated by the College of Alberta Psychologists and Canadian Certified Counsellors certified by the CCPA, working with trauma-focused approaches — somatic therapy, schema therapy, attachment-based and narrative therapy — chosen for where religious trauma actually lives: in the body, in core beliefs about being bad or unsafe, and in the story you were handed about who you’re allowed to be. Whether you’re still inside a community, on your way out, or years past the door and still carrying it, your beliefs — kept, changed, or left behind — are yours here: book a free, no-obligation 20-minute consultation and we’ll match you with a therapist who understands.

What is Religious and Spiritual Trauma?

Religious and spiritual trauma refers to the psychological and emotional distress caused by harmful religious or spiritual beliefs, practices, or environments.

This trauma can arise from various situations, including emotional, physical, or sexual abuse by clergy or other religious authority figures; involvement in cults or high-control religious organizations that impose rigid rules and punish dissent; exposure to doctrines promoting fear, shame, or self-loathing; and facing ostracism or persecution for leaving a faith or questioning beliefs.

These experiences can profoundly impact an individual’s mental and emotional well-being, often requiring specialized therapeutic support to navigate and heal from the deep wounds inflicted by such environments.

What is Religious Trauma Syndrome?

Religious Trauma Syndrome (RTS) is a term used to describe the specific set of symptoms and characteristics associated with religious trauma.

RTS can encompass a range of emotional, cognitive, and social difficulties that arise from harmful religious experiences

It is not yet recognized as an official diagnosis in the DSM-5 but is gaining recognition among mental health professionals as a significant and distinct form of trauma.

How Does Religious Trauma Affect the Brain?

Religious trauma can have a profound impact on the brain, similar to other types of trauma. It can affect the brain’s structure and function in the following ways:

  • Heightened Stress Response: Chronic stress from religious trauma can lead to an overactive amygdala, causing heightened anxiety and fear responses.
  • Memory and Learning Impairment: Trauma can impact the hippocampus, leading to difficulties with memory and learning.
  • Emotional Regulation Issues: The prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision-making and emotional regulation, can be affected, making it harder to manage emotions and stress.

Symptoms of Religious Trauma

Recognizing the symptoms of religious trauma is crucial for seeking appropriate help. Symptoms may include:

  • Emotional Symptoms: These can manifest as anxiety and panic attacks, depression and feelings of hopelessness, intense guilt and shame, as well as anger and resentment. These emotional responses can be overwhelming and deeply affect daily life.
  • Physical Symptoms: Individuals may experience fatigue and exhaustion, sleep disturbances, physical pain and tension, and frequent headaches and digestive issues. These physical manifestations often accompany the emotional distress caused by religious trauma.
  • Behavioral Symptoms: This includes avoidance of religious or spiritual settings, withdrawal from social activities and relationships, difficulty trusting others, and engaging in compulsive or self-destructive behaviors. These behaviors are often coping mechanisms to deal with the trauma.

Treating Religious and Spiritual Trauma

How Do You Treat Religious Trauma?

Treating religious and spiritual trauma involves a comprehensive and individualized approach. Effective therapies and treatments include:

  • Attachment-Based Therapy: Addresses the limiting effects of negative early attachment experiences and strengthens the capacity for secure relationships and adaptive actions in the world.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps reframe negative thoughts and beliefs.
  • Trauma-Focused Therapy: Addresses the traumatic experiences directly.
  • Schema Therapy: Combines elements of CBT and psychodynamic therapy to address maladaptive schemas.
  • Somatic Therapy: Focuses on body awareness and releasing stored tension from trauma.
  • Narrative Therapy: Provides the opportunity to externalize experiences and reconstruct meaning.
  • Support Groups: Connecting with others who have experienced similar traumas can provide validation and support.
  • Self-Care Practices: Encouraging mindfulness, relaxation techniques, and self-compassion.
  • Psychoeducation: Educating clients about the effects of trauma and healthy coping mechanisms.

Healing from religious trauma is a personal journey that involves:

  • Rebuilding Identity: Exploring and redefining personal beliefs and values.
  • Establishing Boundaries: Learning to set and maintain healthy boundaries with others.
  • Developing Self-Compassion: Cultivating kindness and understanding towards oneself.

Religious and Spiritual Trauma Therapy: Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers about what religious trauma is, how it is treated, and what to expect at Curio, so you know exactly what is ahead before you book.

Religious or spiritual trauma is the psychological and emotional distress caused by harmful religious or spiritual beliefs, practices, or environments. It can come from abuse by a religious authority figure, involvement in a high-control group, exposure to teachings rooted in fear and shame, or being ostracized for questioning or leaving a faith.

These experiences can leave deep wounds that often benefit from specialized, compassionate support.

Religious Trauma Syndrome is a term used to describe the specific set of emotional, cognitive, and social difficulties that can follow harmful religious experiences. It is not yet an official diagnosis in the DSM-5, but it is increasingly recognized by mental health professionals as a real and distinct form of trauma that deserves treatment.

Symptoms vary, but commonly include emotional signs such as anxiety, panic, depression, hopelessness, intense guilt, shame, anger, and resentment; physical signs such as fatigue, sleep problems, tension, headaches, and digestive issues; and behavioural signs such as avoiding religious settings, withdrawing from relationships, difficulty trusting others, and compulsive or self-destructive coping.

If several of these resonate, it may be worth reaching out.

No. Curio offers a safe, non-judgmental space, and your beliefs are yours to define. Whether you are deconstructing, questioning, holding onto your faith, leaving a community, or somewhere in between, our role is to support your healing on your terms, not to steer you toward any particular conclusion about religion or spirituality.

Treatment is individualized and may draw on attachment-based therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), trauma-focused approaches, schema therapy, somatic therapy, and narrative therapy, along with psychoeducation and self-care practices.

The work often focuses on processing the trauma, easing shame and guilt, rebuilding identity, and developing healthy boundaries and self-compassion.

Absolutely. Doubt, deconstruction, and harm experienced within a faith community are welcome topics here, and you will be accompanied through them without an agenda.
