What to Expect
Whether you’ve participated in mental health counselling in the past or this is your first time talking with a therapist, you might be wondering what to expect when you come to see us at Curio Counselling in Calgary.
What to Expect
The purpose of counselling is to work with a trained therapist to create the changes in your life that you want. Talking with a counsellor can help you understand yourself better, learn new ways of coping with the challenges and stresses in your life, improve your relationships, and increase your overall wellness.
Talking with a counsellor is not the same thing as talking with a friend or trusted loved one. Conversations between you and your therapist have a specific purpose and are designed to help you accomplish your goals. In order for counselling to be effective, you must be prepared to share sensitive, personal, and private information that may be distressing at times.
During the course of counselling, your beliefs and perceptions may be challenged, you may find yourself annoyed, tired, confused, distressed, or overwhelmed. This is common and usually means you are challenging yourself and trying new ways of being. Your counsellor is trained to support you throughout this process.
When You Arrive
You can expect to be greeted by our receptionist, invited to take a seat in our waiting area, and offered a beverage.
If our receptionist is unavailable, you will have the option of checking in online or simply making yourself comfortable in our waiting area until your therapist comes out to greet you.
Our counselling spaces are designed to make you feel comfortable and safe. Upon entering a counselling room, you are welcome to choose whichever seat you would like.
Feel free to put your feet up, drape a blanket over yourself, or even lie down.
Counselling is about you, the client. At Curio Counselling in Calgary we believe that counselling should be a collaborative experience, with the therapist bringing their expertise on mental health services and the clients bringing their expertise on their own lives.
In other words, your Curio therapist is working with and for you. You get to set your own goals, are in charge of what you discuss in sessions, and decide how much to share with your counsellor.
