Whether it’s a fear of heights, flying, spiders, or public speaking, phobias can cause immense distress and interfere with personal and professional relationships.

Through evidence-based techniques and personalized treatment plans, we empower you to confront your fears and live a life free from the constraints of phobias.
What Constitutes a Phobia?
A phobia is characterized by an intense and irrational fear of a specific object, situation, or activity. Individuals with phobias may experience overwhelming anxiety and panic when faced with their triggers, leading to avoidance behaviors and significant distress. While phobias may seem irrational to others, they can have a profound impact on an individual’s quality of life, leading to avoidance behaviors, social isolation, and impaired functioning. Some common types of phobias include:
- Acrophobia (fear of heights)
- Aerophobia (fear of flying)
- Agoraphobia (fear of open spaces)
- Arachnophobia (fear of spiders)
- Claustrophobia (fear of closed spaces)
- Hemophobia (fear of blood)
- Trypanophobia (fear of needles)
- Dentophobia (fear of dentists)
- Entomophobia (fear of insects)
- Glossophobia (fear of public speaking)
- Social phobia (fear of social situations)
- Thanatophobia (fear of death)
What Causes Phobias?
Phobias can develop as a result of various factors, including genetic predisposition, traumatic experiences, learned behaviors, and environmental influences.
For some individuals, a phobia may arise following a traumatic event or negative experience associated with a specific object or situation.
Others may develop phobias through observational learning or conditioning, where they associate a particular stimulus with fear and anxiety.
Understanding the underlying causes of your phobia is an essential step in overcoming it.
Through phobia counselling in Calgary, our therapists can help you explore the root causes of your fear and develop personalized strategies to manage and alleviate your symptoms.
Which Therapy Works Best for Phobias?
At Curio Counselling, we believe in utilizing evidence-based treatments to effectively address phobias and anxiety disorders. By incorporating these therapeutic approaches into our counselling sessions, we help clients develop the skills and resilience needed to confront their fears and live fulfilling lives. Two of the most commonly used therapies for phobias include:
- Exposure Therapy: Exposure therapy involves gradually exposing individuals to their feared objects or situations in a controlled and supportive environment. By facing their fears in a systematic manner, individuals can learn to tolerate and eventually overcome their phobias.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT focuses on identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and beliefs associated with phobias. Through cognitive restructuring and behavioral techniques, individuals can learn to change their reactions to feared stimuli and develop more adaptive coping strategies.

Phobia Therapy Calgary: Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a phobia and a normal fear?
Fear is a normal, useful response to real danger. A phobia is an intense, persistent fear that's out of proportion to the actual threat and that you go out of your way to avoid. Being cautious near a cliff edge is fear. Refusing a job because the office is on the tenth floor is a phobia. The defining feature isn't the fear itself, it's the avoidance and the cost: when dodging the feared thing starts shaping your decisions, relationships, or work, it's worth treating.
Can a phobia actually be cured, or just managed?
Specific phobias are among the most treatable of all anxiety conditions. Exposure-based therapy resolves or dramatically reduces most specific phobias, and the results tend to hold. The goal isn't to feel zero nervousness ever again, it's to take the fear's power away so it no longer controls what you do. Many people reach the point where the feared situation is, at most, a mild annoyance.
What is exposure therapy, and is it as scary as it sounds?
Exposure therapy means facing the feared object or situation gradually, in a planned order you control, so your nervous system learns through direct experience that it's safe. It is not being thrown in the deep end. You and your therapist build a step-by-step ladder, starting with something only mildly uncomfortable, and you don't move up until each step feels manageable. For a spider phobia, that might begin with looking at a cartoon spider, long before there's any real one in the room. You're always in the driver's seat.
Will I have to face my biggest fear in the first session?
No. The first session is an assessment. Your therapist will ask about your phobia, its triggers, how it affects your life, and what you've already tried, then map out a plan and a set of goals together with you. Actual exposure work starts later, gently, and only at a pace you agree to. Nothing happens that you haven't talked through first.
How many sessions does phobia treatment usually take?
A single, well-defined specific phobia, like a fear of flying or needles, often improves in a relatively short course of sessions. Phobias that are more wide-ranging, like agoraphobia, or that sit alongside panic or past trauma, usually take longer. Your therapist will give you a realistic estimate after the first assessment and adjust it as you progress. There's no fixed package, you continue because it's working.
Which phobias do you treat at Curio?
Our Calgary therapists work with the full range of phobias, including:
- Fear of heights (acrophobia) and flying (aerophobia)
- Fear of spiders and insects (arachnophobia, entomophobia)
- Fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia) and open spaces (agoraphobia)
- Fear of needles, blood, and dentists (trypanophobia, hemophobia, dentophobia)
- Fear of public speaking (glossophobia) and social situations
- Fear of driving, vomiting, animals, storms, and more
If your specific fear isn't listed, it's almost certainly still treatable with the same approach. The method works across phobias, not just the common ones.
What if my phobia is of needles, blood, or the dentist and I faint?
Blood, needle, and injury phobias are a special case because they can cause a drop in blood pressure that leads to fainting, unlike most phobias, where the heart races. The good news is there's a specific, well-established technique for this called applied tension, where you learn to tense your muscles to keep your blood pressure up and prevent fainting, combined with gradual exposure. If this is your phobia, mention it at your consultation so your therapist can build it into the plan from the start. It's very treatable, and it matters for things like medical care, dental visits, and pregnancy.
What causes phobias in the first place?
Phobias usually grow from a mix of factors: a frightening or traumatic experience with the object or situation, learning the fear by watching someone else (a parent who panicked around dogs, for example), and a temperament or family history that runs anxious. Sometimes there's a clear origin story, and sometimes there isn't. Here's the reassuring part: you don't need to pinpoint the cause for treatment to work. Exposure therapy retrains the fear response regardless of how it started.
How much does phobia therapy cost in Calgary, and is it covered by insurance?
Phobia therapy at Curio is priced by your therapist's designation:
- $200/hour — Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC)
- $230/hour — Registered Provisional Psychologist
- $230/hour — Registered Psychologist
Most Alberta extended health and employee benefit plans cover sessions with a Registered Psychologist or Registered Provisional Psychologist; coverage for Canadian Certified Counsellors varies by insurer, so check your plan wording. Every new client starts with a free 20-minute consultation before committing to anything. Confirm current pricing and direct-billing options when you book.
Can phobia therapy be done online?
Yes. We offer both in-person sessions at our Beltline office and secure virtual sessions across Alberta. A lot of phobia work, planning your exposure ladder, learning coping skills, processing how it went, translates well to video. Some exposures are even easier to practise from home or in your own environment between sessions. Your therapist will recommend the format that fits your specific phobia and goals.
Do you offer phobia therapy for children and teens?
Yes. Phobias often start in childhood, and the same gradual-exposure approach works well with kids and teens, adapted to be age-appropriate and often playful. We offer child and youth counselling and can involve parents in the plan so progress carries over at home. Early treatment can stop a childhood phobia from following someone into adulthood.
I get anxious just thinking about starting. How do I take the first step?
Start small. Curio's free, no-obligation 20-minute consultation is a low-pressure way to ask questions and see whether a therapist feels like the right fit, by phone or video, before you commit to anything. You can also meet our Calgary therapists first, or call us at 403-243-0303. Nothing about treatment moves faster than you're ready for, and that includes the very first conversation.
