Stress Counselling Calgary
Curio Counselling provides stress and burnout therapy in Calgary for workplace pressure, emotional exhaustion, caregiver strain, and chronic stress that no longer switches off when the workday ends. Sessions are available in person at our Beltline office, 1414 8 St SW Suite 200, or online by video anywhere in Alberta.
Our team includes Registered Psychologists regulated by the College of Alberta Psychologists and Canadian Certified Counsellors certified by the CCPA. Depending on what is driving your burnout, your therapist may use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), or somatic, nervous-system-based approaches. The goal is to change the pattern that produces the exhaustion, not just to rest inside it.
If you’re running on empty — snapping at people you care about, dreading Monday before the weekend is over, or too drained to enjoy anything outside work — book a free 20-minute consultation and we’ll match you with a therapist suited to what you’re carrying.
Understanding Stress and Burnout
Stress is a natural response to the demands of life, triggering your body’s “fight or flight” response to help you deal with challenging situations. While some level of stress is normal and can even be beneficial in certain situations, chronic or excessive stress can have detrimental effects on your physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
Burnout, on the other hand, is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged exposure to high levels of stress. It’s important to recognize that burnout isn’t simply feeling tired or overwhelmed—it’s a specific condition characterized by feelings of depletion, detachment, and ineffectiveness.
Symptoms of Stress and Burnout:
- Persistent Fatigue: Chronic stress can leave you feeling constantly tired and drained, even after a full night’s sleep. You may find it difficult to muster the energy to complete daily tasks or engage in activities you once enjoyed.
- Increased Irritability: Stress and burnout can lead to heightened levels of irritability and frustration, making it challenging to maintain patience and composure in everyday interactions. You may find yourself snapping at loved ones or coworkers over minor issues.
- Difficulty Concentrating: Prolonged stress can impair your ability to focus and concentrate, affecting your performance at work or school. You may struggle to complete tasks or make decisions, leading to feelings of overwhelm and frustration.
- Physical Symptoms: Stress and burnout can manifest in a variety of physical symptoms, including headaches, muscle tension, stomach problems, and changes in appetite or sleep patterns. These physical manifestations are your body’s way of signaling that something isn’t right.
- Emotional Exhaustion: Burnout often accompanies feelings of emotional exhaustion, leaving you feeling drained and depleted. You may experience a sense of numbness or detachment from your emotions, making it difficult to connect with others or experience pleasure.
- Loss of Interest: Chronic stress and burnout can diminish your interest in activities or hobbies that once brought you joy. You may find yourself withdrawing from social interactions or avoiding situations that used to be enjoyable.
- Decreased Productivity: Despite your best efforts, you may find it increasingly difficult to meet your responsibilities or perform at your usual level. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy or failure, exacerbating the cycle of stress and burnout.
How Does Stress Lead to Burnout?
Chronic stress can take a toll on your physical and mental health, leading to burnout over time. When you’re constantly under pressure and unable to find relief, your body and mind can become overwhelmed, resulting in burnout. Common causes of stress and burnout include:
- Work-related pressures and deadlines
- Relationship problems
- Financial stress
- Caregiver responsibilities
- Traumatic events or life transitions
How Can a Therapist Help With Burnout?
Therapy can be an invaluable resource for individuals struggling with stress and burnout. A therapist can provide a safe and supportive space for you to explore your feelings, identify underlying causes of stress, and develop coping strategies to manage burnout symptoms. Some ways a therapist can help include:
- Providing validation and empathy for your experiences
- Teaching stress management techniques such as relaxation exercises and mindfulness meditation
- Helping you set healthy boundaries and prioritize self-care
- Exploring underlying issues contributing to burnout, such as perfectionism or people-pleasing tendencies
- Developing strategies for managing work-related stress and improving work-life balance
Best Therapy Approaches for Burnout
At Curio Counselling, we offer a range of therapy approaches to help you effectively manage stress and burnout. Some of the most effective therapy modalities for addressing burnout include:
- Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): Helps identify and challenge negative thought patterns and develop healthier coping strategies.
- Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR): Teaches mindfulness meditation and other mindfulness practices to reduce stress and enhance well-being.
- Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): Focuses on accepting difficult thoughts and feelings while taking action aligned with personal values.

- Weakened immune system, making you more susceptible to infections and illnesses
- Mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse

Stress & Burnout Counselling Calgary: FAQ
What's the difference between stress and burnout?
Stress is "too much"; burnout is "running on empty." Stress is your body's response to demands and pressure. It spikes and then settles once the pressure eases, and in short bursts it's normal and even useful. Burnout is what happens when stress doesn't ease: sustained pressure with too little recovery for too long. It's a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion with a particular signature: depletion, cynicism or detachment, and a sense that nothing you do is effective. The distinction matters because they need different responses, and burnout rarely improves with a long weekend.
How do I know if I'm burned out or just tired?
Tiredness lifts with rest; burnout doesn't. You can sleep a full night and still wake up depleted. A few signs it's more than ordinary tiredness:
- Exhaustion that rest no longer fixes
- Growing cynicism, irritability, or detachment from work and people you care about
- Trouble concentrating or making decisions
- Feeling ineffective no matter how hard you try
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
- Physical signs: headaches, muscle tension, stomach issues, changes in sleep or appetite
If several of these have been present for weeks and a break hasn't helped, it's worth talking to a Calgary therapist rather than waiting for it to pass on its own.
Can therapy really help if my job (or situation) is the actual problem?
Yes, therapy helps even when the job is the real problem, because it changes what you can control: your boundaries, your recovery, and the patterns that keep you over-functioning. It won't change your workload or your boss. What it does is give you leverage you don't currently have: boundary-setting skills, work on perfectionism, people-pleasing, and difficulty saying no, restored capacity to recover, and clarity on what actually needs to change, whether that's how you work, where you work, or what you're willing to carry. Many people arrive feeling trapped and leave with a plan and the resourcing to act on it.
How long does it take to recover from burnout?
Most people notice real improvement within the first month or two of consistent therapy, with deeper burnout recovery unfolding over a few months. Early-stage stress often eases within a handful of sessions once you have better tools and boundaries. Full burnout, the depleted, detached, running-on-empty kind, usually takes longer, because recovery isn't just feeling better: it's rebuilding your capacity and changing the patterns that drained it, and it depends on whether the conditions that caused it change. Your therapist will set realistic expectations after the first session and adjust as you go.
What therapy approaches do you use for stress and burnout?
Stress and burnout therapy at Curio Counselling in Calgary uses four evidence-based approaches, blended to fit you: CBT, mindfulness-based stress reduction, ACT, and somatic nervous-system work.
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) - to catch and change the thought patterns that fuel stress, like perfectionism and all-or-nothing thinking
- Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) - practical mindfulness skills that calm the nervous system and interrupt the stress spiral
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) - making room for hard feelings while taking action aligned with what matters to you
- Somatic and nervous-system work - for the physical side of burnout: the tension, depletion, and dysregulation
The mix is tailored to whether your stress is mostly cognitive, physical, situational, or all three.
How much does stress counselling cost in Calgary, and is it covered by insurance?
Stress counselling in Calgary at Curio Counselling costs $200 per hour with a Canadian Certified Counsellor, $200 per hour with a Registered Provisional Psychologist, and $230 per hour with a Registered Psychologist.
- $230/hour - Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC)
- $230/hour - Registered Provisional Psychologist
- $230/hour - Registered Psychologist
Most Alberta extended health and employee benefit plans cover sessions with a Registered Psychologist or Registered Provisional Psychologist; coverage for Canadian Certified Counsellors varies by insurer, so check your plan wording. If your workplace offers an EAP (Employee Assistance Program), that may cover a set number of sessions too. Every new client starts with a free 20-minute consultation.
Can a therapist help with stress leave or work documentation?
Stress leave is usually arranged through your family doctor or a psychologist, since most employers and insurers require documentation from a physician or registered psychologist. Counselling supports the recovery side: helping you use the time well, address what led to the burnout, and prepare to return sustainably. A Registered Psychologist on our team may be able to assist with assessment and documentation depending on your situation. If a stress leave is something you're weighing, mention it at your consultation so we can point you to the right path, and please confirm current documentation services with the clinic before booking for this purpose.
Can stress and burnout therapy be done online?
Yes, and for stress and burnout it's often the easier option. Curio Counselling offers in-person sessions at its Beltline Calgary office (1414 8 St SW, Suite 200) and secure virtual sessions across Alberta. Virtual therapy removes the commute and the logistics, which matters a lot when your capacity is already stretched, and the skills-based work, CBT, mindfulness, boundary planning, translates well to video. Most Alberta insurance plans cover online therapy the same way they cover in-person sessions. You can mix the two as your week allows.
I know I need help, but I have no time or energy. How do I start?
Start with Curio Counselling's free, no-obligation 20-minute consultation: it's done by phone or video, on your schedule, with no pressure to commit and no need to explain everything first. That feeling of needing help but having nothing left to organize it is burnout itself talking, which is exactly why we keep the first step small. You can meet our Calgary therapists online beforehand, and if what's underneath the stress turns out to be anxiety or low mood, sessions can fold in anxiety counselling or individual therapy too. One small step is enough to start.
