Meet Our Calgary Therapists & Counsellors

Meet the Calgary therapists behind Curio Counselling. Every counsellor and psychologist on our team holds a Master of Counselling degree from an accredited university and is a member in good standing with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA), the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP), and/or the Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (ACTA). These are not equivalent statuses, and we state each one plainly. Registered Psychologists and Registered Provisional Psychologists are regulated by CAP under Alberta’s Health Professions Act. Canadian Certified Counsellors hold national certification through the CCPA. Counselling Therapists are members of ACTA. Counselling therapy is not currently a regulated profession in Alberta; the province announced in March 2024 an intention to bring it under CAP, which has not yet been proclaimed.

What sets our therapists apart is depth of training. Alongside their graduate education, our Calgary counsellors and psychologists carry specialized certifications in evidence-based approaches such as EMDR, CBT, ACT, IFS, somatic therapy, Gottman, and play therapy, and each focuses on the specific concerns and age groups they work with best — from anxiety counselling , depression counselling, and trauma to ADHD counselling, grief, relationships, and child and youth support.

Browse the profiles below to see each therapist’s clinical focus, the ages they work with, and the counselling services  Calgary they offer. Not sure who to choose? Frequently Asked Questions About Our Calgary Therapists

What is the difference between a psychologist, a provisional psychologist, and a certified counsellor?

All three are qualified, regulated mental health professionals. The titles reflect different colleges and stages of registration, not who can help you more.

  • Registered Psychologist: holds a master's or doctoral degree, has completed all supervised practice hours, and is fully registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP).
  • Registered Provisional Psychologist: holds the same graduate education and is registered with CAP while completing the final supervised practice hours toward full registration, working under the supervision of a Registered Psychologist.
  • Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) / Counselling Therapist: holds a Master of Counselling degree and is certified by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) or the Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (ACTA).

Every therapist at Curio holds a Master of Counselling degree and is a member in good standing with CCPA, CAP, and/or ACTA. The designation can affect your insurance coverage, so the practical difference for most clients is which title your benefits plan reimburses — not the quality of care.

How do I choose the right therapist for me?

The strongest predictor of progress in therapy is the relationship itself — feeling safe, understood, and respected by the person across from you. Credentials and specialty matter, but fit matters just as much.

  • Match the focus to your concern. Each of our therapist profiles lists clinical focus areas, from anxiety and trauma to ADHD, grief, and relationships. Start with someone who works in your area.
  • Consider format and age. Some of our team see adults only; others work with children, teens, couples, or families. The age ranges are noted on each bio.
  • Use the free consultation. A 20-minute call is the fastest way to tell whether a therapist feels like the right fit before you book a full session.

If you're unsure who to choose, call us at 403-243-0303 and we'll help match you with a therapist based on what you're looking for.

Are your Calgary therapists qualified and registered?

Yes. Every therapist on our team holds a Master of Counselling degree from an accredited university and is a member in good standing with at least one of Alberta's recognized regulatory bodies:

  • College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) for our Registered and Registered Provisional Psychologists.
  • Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) for our Canadian Certified Counsellors.
  • Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta (ACTA) for our Counselling Therapists.

You can verify any therapist's standing directly through the CAP, CCPA, or ACTA public registers. Beyond their core training, our therapists hold specialized certifications in approaches such as EMDR, CBT, ACT, IFS, Gottman, and play therapy.

How much does it cost to see a therapist at Curio?

Our fees are set by each therapist's designation:

  • $200 per hour with a Canadian Certified Counsellor or Counselling Therapist.
  • $230 per hour with a Registered Provisional Psychologist.
  • $230 per hour with a Registered Psychologist.

The Psychologists' Association of Alberta recommends $235 per 50-minute session, so our rates sit below the Calgary average. Every new client can begin with a free, no-obligation 20-minute consultation. If cost is a barrier, ask us about sliding-scale availability.

Does insurance or Alberta Health Care cover my sessions?

The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) does not cover private counselling or psychology, so sessions are paid through extended health benefits, an Employee Assistance Program, or out of pocket. Most workplace benefit plans reimburse a portion of each session up to an annual maximum.

Coverage often depends on the therapist's designation — some plans reimburse Registered Psychologists, some cover Canadian Certified Counsellors, and many cover both. Because our team includes Registered Psychologists, Registered Provisional Psychologists, and Canadian Certified Counsellors, we can usually match you with a therapist your plan covers. Check your policy for which designations are eligible, your annual maximum, and whether a doctor's note is required, then we'll provide a receipt for you to submit.

Do I need a doctor's referral to book a counsellor?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with any of our therapists for any concern — you don't need to see a family doctor first. The one exception is your own insurance: a small number of benefit plans ask for a physician's note before they'll reimburse, so it's worth a quick check with your provider if you plan to claim. Booking itself is open to everyone, with or without a referral.

Can I switch therapists if it isn't the right fit?

Absolutely, and it's more common than people expect. Fit is personal, and finding the right match sometimes takes a session or two. If your therapist doesn't feel like the right one, you can ask to be matched with someone else on our team at any time — no awkward conversation required, just let us know.

Switching within the same practice also means your new therapist can pick up smoothly with your consent, so you don't have to start over from scratch. Wanting a different fit is information, not failure, and we'd rather you stay in therapy with the right person than stop altogether.

Do you offer in-person, online, and phone sessions?

Yes. You can see any of our therapists in person at our office at 1414 8 St SW, Suite 200 in Calgary's Beltline, or by secure video or phone anywhere in Alberta. Sessions are delivered over a private, PIPEDA-compliant video platform, so virtual therapy is just as confidential as meeting in person.

Many clients mix formats week to week depending on their schedule, energy, or weather. If you're not sure which suits you, you can decide session by session.

What ages do your therapists work with?

As a team, we support clients across the lifespan — from young children through teens, adults, and couples and families. Each therapist works with specific age ranges, which are listed on their individual bios, so the right starting point depends on who you're booking for:

If you're booking for a child or teen, check the age range on the therapist's profile or call us and we'll point you to the right fit.

How do I book, and what is the free consultation?

You can book online any time through our Jane booking page, or call us at 403-243-0303. From a therapist's profile you can go straight to their availability.

Before booking a paid session, every new client is welcome to a free, no-obligation 20-minute phone or video consultation with the therapist of their choice. It's a low-pressure way to ask questions, describe what you're looking for, and see whether the fit feels right — with nothing owed if you decide not to continue.

Is Curio an inclusive and 2SLGBTQ+ affirming practice?

Yes. Curio is a fully inclusive practice that welcomes and serves people of all races, gender identities and expressions, sexual orientations, classes, abilities, faiths, and cultural backgrounds. Several of our therapists list 2SLGBTQ+ and identity exploration among their clinical focus areas, and our whole team works to make therapy a safe space.

We also acknowledge that we practice on the traditional territory of the Blackfoot and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. If feeling understood and respected is important to you, the free consultation is a good chance to talk through what you need before you book.
